Thanksgiving Chic

What will you be wearing this year?

What’s your day going to be like?

Are you spending the day cooking in the kitchen with the family, followed by an informal dinner packed around the house? Are you perhaps joining in with a gathering of friends for a fun social dinner and festivities?  Or are you going out to dinner at a fine restaurant for a more formal evening?

Here are three different outfits that will work for the Holiday centered around a delicious meal and enjoying the company of loved ones.

For a more formal dinner, a dress with a bit of Fall character makes the evening special.  Something with an interesting detail with a classic silhouette is perfect.  This is a Holiday after all!

For a dinner at friends, making an effort to look nice is respectful to your hosts, but make sure you are dressed comfortably, especially in the waist band! Try a whimsical piece matched with knit.  Add jewelry but not the fussy pieces that get in your way:

For an informal affair, have fun with your outfit, no matter how casual.  Jeans are great, but wear your nicer pair, have fun with your top, layers add depth to your ensemble and will cover you no matter what you end up doing.  Keep your accessories simple but with character.

Style Advise for All Body Types #6

Lesson # 6 - The Fine Print on Print

Size Matters
The larger the person, the larger the scale of the print should be. The reverse is also true.

The Base Line
Patterns with a darker background are always more slimming.

Block It Out
Shave off inches with color blocking that uses vertical panels along the sides of the body. If you, like many of us, are uneven; darker colors where you are bigger and lighter colors where you are smaller will be the most flattering color blocking choices for you!

Linear Thinking
Verticle stripes are always flattering, while horizontal stripes can be tricky. But a dark top with thin, colorful lines about an inch apart, is a safe bet for almost anyone.

Style and Color are Key
Curvy patterns will pick up the curves in your Body, Hair, and Skin, Angular patterns will pick up the angles and lines.  The same goes for Color and Contrast.
Choose patterns that compliment your natural beauty.

Style advice for all Body types #5

Lesson #5 - Jean Pockets to help Behind

A fuller rear: Choose large, straight pockets spaced somewhat close together. Make sure the pocket hits the lower part of your bottom or it will make your bottom look too big for the jeans and will be diprportionate looking. Also, stick with subtle stitching.

A flatter rear: Medium-size pockets at a slight angle will create the illusion of fullnes. Flaps and embroidery also get a thumbs-up for contributing extra dimension.  Pockets that are to big, will overtake your rear and make it look like that there is nothing there.

A, well, not-so-young rear: To fight droopage that can occur with age get pockets that are closer together and sit higher up. Curvy details (loops and swirls versus chevrons and stripes) can create a curvier look, but too much "bling" can just call attention to an area best left alone.  Keep a look classic and simple.

Lesson #4 - Diagonal Lines Make It All Better

Ever wonder why every woman has at least one wrap dress in her wardrobe that seems to come out when ever everything else "makes her look fat"?

Thank diagonals and their slimming—and curve-creating—superpowers!
The area where you place that downward-sloping angle is going to appear narrower.

The secret: The eye wants to folllow lines, so diagnol lines create the illusion of an hourglass shape.

These lines can also be found in design details like bias-cut seams, well placed chevron prints, asymmetrical necklines and hemlines, diagnol color blocking and many other clever forms of slanted lines.

So next time you are having one of "those days"...look for a garment that has a strategically placed diagnol line that cuts accross that problem area!

Lesson # 3 - Structure Is Forgiving

Think of tailored garments (pieces with seams, peplums, structured shoulders, waistlines) as your body shapers.

If you pour a pitcher of water into a bag with no structure it is shapeless, but if you pour that water into a vase, it takes on the sexy shape of that vase.

So clothe your body in pieces that have the shape you desire already:
Try a sharp-shouldered blazer to make your waist look smaller or a fit-and-flare peplum silhouette to manufacture va-va-voom hips. Seams down the sides give yor midsection structure, while darts and pleats on a pant or skirt can creat a flattering shape for your back view!

Darts and seaming can provide definition wherever you need it.

Lesson #2 - Color Can Trick the Eye

The Simple rule is Darks receed and Lights project.  Darks hide what they are put over, so wear them where you'd like to hide things, and choose lights or brights, which call attention to the eye, where you want to show things off.

Remember that Black is not the only Dark out there, so if you are tired of balck, or just don't wear it, pick another shade of dark.  Any deep shade; gray, navy, brown, burgandy, forest green or plum will all do the trick.

Wearing different tones of the same color can also help hide flaws and create a leaner look. If you are top heavy, try and darker shade on top and a lighter shade on the bottom to balance out your proportions.

You can also use color monochromatically, by dressing in one color from head to toe, even in light colors this will help create a long lean, verticle line.  Who doesn't want a little help looking a little taller and leaner?

Style Advice for All Body Types #1

These Tips for flattering one's figure work for all shapes and sizes.

Lesson # 1 - Proportion Is All About Balance

Voluminous pieces can be a fat-day wish-come-true; provided you know which silhouettes work for you and how to wear them.

The formula is always pair something oversize with something fitted. If you choose a loose tunic to cover your tummy, wear it with cigarette pants. Hiding lower-body issues with a full skirt? Great, but team it with a fitted top or a tucked-in shirt. A belt to creat structure is usually a great addition too.  Never go volume with volume or you’ll end up in tent territory.

It’s also important to even out your frame: If you’re wider in the shoulder or bust, try a some volume below. Offset a large bust with bootcuts, or broad shoulders with an A-line.   The same does with a wider hip; it needs to balaned on top with a wide collar or a volumus blouse.

Summer Shorts

While a short will occasionally pop up in a fall Collection or a winter ensemble with leggings and Leg warmers, Shorts really shine in the Hot summer months.  Shorts are also a type of Garment that many people have trouble wearing, not because they can’t, they just don’t know how to make them look their best.  Shorts can be quite unflattering if not put together the right way.  With the right tools however, anyone can wear shorts!

Wearing shorts the right way is all about balancing proportion.  Like skirt length, the length of the short can enhance your proportions or put them off, and unlike the skirt there really is very little wiggle room.  The short must fit right like a pant and be the correct length like a skirt.

Understanding your proportions is the key to understanding how you can wear shorts this summer!

Things to remember when picking shorts:
Length of short
Taking care of your legs
Shoes are very important part of making a short ensemble look good
