5 steps to Creating a more organized closet.

One of the biggest New Year resolutions is getting more organized.
Why not start with your closet?
Here are 5 easy steps to help make it happen!

1. Start simple: Get everything out of your closet that is not directly related to your clothes. If it is not a garment or an accessory it belongs somewhere else.
2. Pull everything out that you have not worn in the past year. Set these aside to assess later. The more room in your closet the easier it will be to see everything and the easier it will be to organize.
3. Everything that you decide to keep should go on uniform hangers. If your closet has limited space use tiered hangers for pants and skirts to save space, but if you have the space, make sure everything is on its own hanger. (Even if two things go together, like a sweater set or a cami and sheer blouse, keep them on separate hangers that can hang off each other so they don’t get separated.)
4. Divide your closet by sections; each section is a different level of dress. The specifics will depend on your lifestyle on what most of your clothes are for. If you have distinct work clothes and distinct weekend clothes then those are two sections in your closet. If you work out a lot that may also be a section.
5. Each section should be then organized by color, type of garment or outfits; again, how you choose to do this depends on what makes the most sense to you.

The wardrobe pyramid:

The Staples: (about 12 pieces) Staples are made up of a suit (or two), good neutral dress pants, quality skirt and basic dress for women, a separate jacket, good business shoes, boots, a practical bag, and a coat. The staples should also fit well, be neutral colors in solids or classic patterns and textures like tweed and herringbone. Of all the pieces in your wardrobe, the Staples should be the highest quality, they should dress up or dress down easily.

The Statement pieces: (about 10 pieces) these are often decorative, they can include an unusual jacket, a creative skirt, unforgettable tops and show stopping pants. Don’t forget great jewelry and accessories like scarves and unusual shoes in this category. For Men a watch can be a real WOW factor. Statement pieces take any plane outfit to something special. These pieces are colorful, have unusual details in the silhouette or pattern.

The Evening Standards: (about 6 pieces) any of the pieces from this category should be able to easily “dress up” a look: a top, skirt/pants, simple cocktail dress, jacket/embellished cardi, shoes, purse, and a cover up. For Men tuxedo like pants and a sport coat of finer fabrics are musts in the category. A cuffed shirt with dressy cuff-links would be a great addition too! These pieces are all made of luxury fabrics like velvet, silk, lace or satin, they may have sparkle or shine to them and are usually darker neutrals but could be any color.

The Show Stoppers: (about 2 pieces) These only need support from the staples: a jaw dropping cocktail dress, an evening suit, shoes to- di –for, an extraordinary wrap. These must fit perfectly, be expensive looking, and ideally are unusual in design and detail.

Maximizing your wardrobe while still feeling current and fresh can be hard.

The idea is to use every piece in your wardrobe wisely and to its most diverse potential. So, without abandoning your entire closet every season and buying a completely new wardrobe, you need to be thoughtful about what you are going to add, to stay fresh.
The trick is to find great pieces to add to a current wardrobe that can instantly add a new twist to many looks you already have!
A great jacket with modern detail instantly changes any look: it should work with jeans, dress pants, a skirt or over a dress. Choose a neutral color if you have a lot of color in your current wardrobe but if your current wardrobe is mostly neutrals, be bold and pick something with color for a statement!

An unusual top with updated color or pattern is a great way to update and add to a wardrobe. Wear it under a suit or a separates, with jeans, or tuck it into a skirt and finish the look with a sophisticated belt.

1. Making more room in my closet:
Take it one step at a time. Start by simply moving out anything in your closet that isn’t actually clothes or accessories.

2. I want to wear more of the clothes I have:
Pull out three pieces you never wear every week and make a commitment to wear them that week. If you have nothing to wear with an item, start a shopping list. Make it work, or get rid of it!

3. I would like to be able to put together more stylish outfits:
Make sure that everything you wear out the door is completed with details. Jewelry, belts, scarves, and shoes that actually work with what you are wearing will make all the difference. If you pay attention to the details it will look like you made that extra effort.

4. I want to feel great in everything I wear:
If you don’t love it get rid of it. If it just serves a functional purpose but doesn’t make you feel great then find a replacement for the piece that serves the same function but makes you feel like a million bucks!

5. I want to get dressed up more often, and not always end up in the same boring look:
When you find yourself reaching for the same old Jeans, try a casual skirt instead; grab a fun Jacket instead of the same old fleece.

Holiday Luxury!

‘Tis the season for dressing up. So have some fun getting ready for those Holiday parties. Enjoy the process of going all out and getting out your finest.

This year it really is all about Luxury. Think shiny silk, lace, soft velvet and especially fur. Fur is the Ultimate in Luxury is seen everywhere; from big dramatic capes to trim on a bracelet.

And if you are not into real fur, don’t worry the imitation stuff is just as easy to find as the real thing.
With Luxury, you also need Glamour. Think Sparkle and color.

Sequins are everywhere this season; they are being worn with Jeans as well as cocktail dresses. It’s a delightful trend as far as I’m concerned…after all, what girl doesn’t like a bit of sparkle!
While a bit of Bling may not be new for the holidays, this Season we are seeing a lot of bold bright color paired with the sparkle.

This is not the season for the meek or even the subtle, if there ever was a time to embrace true luxury and Glamour, this is the season!

Look for:

Cozy Up in stylish looks for colder weather!

The days are shorter, the temperature is brisker and we can start to see our breath in the air.
As we near the Holiday season dressing in skin revealing “less is more” styles are no longer desirable. Just getting out of a cozy bed into any other clothes then your PJ’s can seem like a daunting task.

So find a way to create a cozy wardrobe of chic pieces that can make in the biggest of winter hibernators come out in style on a chilly day!

Start with the layers that always add a bit of warmth like scarves, shawls, capes, tights, hats and boots. These Layers can easily make any basic outfit cozier and if chosen thoughtfully very stylish for this season.
Choose your color pallet and fabric choice based on what inherently matches you. For instance if you have brown curly hair a textured scarf in brown and a bit of metallic woven in will be stunning…even over jeans a simple top. You can also use these pieces to add a bit of punch.

Choose prints or colors you love but you would not want a whole wardrobe of.

If Animal print is your thing, try a wool cape with a bit of exotic, it will look stunning thrown over an LBD, little Black Dress, or a monochromatic pant look. A basic pencil skirt and sweater may not be warm enough, but pair it with fun tights and great boots and you will be looking chic and feeling hot!

Knits are of course a must for cold weather, so find a few pieces that can work throughout your wardrobe.

Less bulky, simpler items can be layered more easily and will coordinate with a bigger bulk of your existing wardrobe.

Fitted knits that you can throw a jacket over are great. A sweater dress paired with a belt and a scarf can come in very handy when you are just too cold to think about what to wear!

The outer Layer can make all the difference. A great coat is the key to a cozy and stylish winter wardrobe. No matter where you are going, if you throw on a stunning coat that keeps you warm you will look and feel like a million bucks. Find a coat that has a special detail, it should fit well, but have enough room to ear over other layers. Make sure the length is flattering to your proportions and pick your color, don’t just go for black because it’s easy, and choose a color that enhances you!

Rain, Rain! Staying dry and feeling fabulous

The secret to looking good in the rain is to keep things simple and bold.
And of course have all the right rain gear.

Things do not have to match perfectly, but you want great rain boots, a killer coat that can stand up to a little water, and a handy umbrella can be a useful accessory!

Find things that make a bold statement, you want to be noticed in the gloomy weather so choose a bright color or a bold pattern in black and white. Remember to Edit though. You only need one rain piece to make statement; the rest can just support your look. So choose a great coat, stylish boots or a flashy umbrella. The other two pieces should be toned down.

For rain wear, don’t forget about function. You want to look great, but the pieces you choose must also keep you dry, otherwise what is the point! Make sure to look at labels and choose things that actually say water proof, water resistant does not really keep you very dry, especially when that rain really starts pouring from the sky!

So get out there and find a great ensamble that can keep you dry this winter while maintaning your distinct style!

Spicy Colors for fall:

Fall is the time for Pumpkin Pie, spiced cider, squash soaps, cranberry sauce and Carmel Apples. These are warm and spicy flavors.

The colors that go with these flavors like cinnamon brown, pumpkin orange and cranberry red are great colors for your fall wardrobe.

These colors just fit the season.
So Spice things up by adding a color you may find in your favorite fall recipe.
Think of cayenne, paprika, turmeric, cinnamon, cloves, mustard and even herb greens!

If warm fall colors are not the pallet for you, you can still “spice” things up a bit by adding an accessories with fall flavor or wear a color that in the family like a bright yellow instead of mustard or a soft peach instead of pumpkin.

While browns and camels are traditionally paired with this spicy fall pallet and look beautiful with them, blacks, grays and Ivory’s can also work, just keep it simple. A head to toe Ivory outfit with a splash of pumpkin orange is stunning. Black and Orange can be a bit too “Halloween costume” but Black and mustard are really cool together. Grey is actually fun to pair with spicy greens and yellows.

So get in the mood and have a little fun adding some flavor with spicy color to your wardrobe this fall.

Dressing Up for the Fireworks?

Everyone loves a reason to get dressed up, so go on, show a bit of national pride and get dressed up in the Red White and Blue!
Here are some great ways to create a fun festive outfit while still maintaining some sence of savvy style and not crossing the scary line of costume!

Your color choices of course are red white and navy blue, but that doesn’t mean you have to look like the American flag!
Put these colors together thoughtfully, be bold one piece and subtle with something else.
Besides color, Stars and stripes are of course the theme.
Stars may be hard to find, but polka dots give off the same effect and nothing is more fun than pairing polka dots and stripes!

If you are planning on having a picnic and sitting on the grass to watch the fireworks, Blue jeans with a white or red top and fun shoe look very festive and fun.
For hot afternoon colored denim is big this season, so choose red shorts. They are perfectly paired with a navy and white striped top (don’t forget you white straw sun hat!)
For a more formal evening look, try a red dress with a white shrug and a navy clutch
A simple navy dress with a red belt or a scarf is also a clean, chic look.
A red or navy striped Top, white pants and a polka dot shoe is chic, playful and perfect for a more sophisticated look.

This summer we are seeing a relaxed vintage denim as well as denim in really bright colors.

It’s the hottest way to wear jeans this summer, cheery and nostalgic.
The colors that are available in Denim shorts, pants and Capri’s are really fun. It’s a very playful energy these bright colors are creating.

What a great way to have fun with your summer wardrobe.

As for the vintage denim, it reminds me of summertime as a kid. Vintage denim shorts are what you were meant to wear for summer vacation. They are casual, easy, familiar…and of course cool!
With the Vintage Denim a pop of color in the top or the shoe with a fun studded belt looks amazing.

I love the bright colors with earth toned sandals or metallic wedges.

Graduations, what to wear?

Graduations are academic, and almost always during the day.

Color is great for any spring event, but your dress should also reflect respect for the institution. The level of dress should be somewhere between cocktail and business

• It is spring and it is easy for the feminine style to go overboard with pinks and florals, this may not work for the academic environment of a graduation.

Tone it down a bit with solids or subtle prints in fabric that moves. Try a sweater set with a floral skirt and classic shoes with a bow or flower detail.

• The Dramatic Style should keep the graduation look simple but soft. Try a chic sheath dress with some pattern, black or nude pumps and a statement necklace. If the event is outdoors, a statement hat may also be appropriate and very chic.

• Staying conservative enough for a graduation may also be tough on the Creative style. Think suit with a twist. A really unusual Jacket paired with dress trousers and a simple shirt may be perfect. Then the creativity can come out in the accessories!

Building a perfect Travel Wardrobe, 5 Top Tips

1. Get Organized. Write out every day you will be traveling and what you will be doing each day. Based on your itinerary create each complete outfit you will want to bring. Include everything from shoes, to accessories to outerwear. Document every outfit in writing or with photo’s. Make sure you bring this documentation with you.

2. Weather is often unpredictable when traveling. The garments you take should be good layering pieces. You want to be ready for anything when you are far from home and will have limited choices from your suitcase. Make sure you have something for cold weather and something if you need to cool off.

3. Every item you pack needs to work in two or more complete outfits. You can wear most clothes more than once before washing, so plan on using the same outfits with slight tweaks. Try simply changing a shirt or adding an accessory.

4. Accessorize! Scarves, cloth belts and Jewelry are easy to pack and don’t take up much room so keep your outfits simple and use these to create variety and style.

5. Choose great traveling garments for your traveling wardrobe. Good traveling pieces must be low maintenance, in fabrics like knits, jerseys, and microtecks. What to wear Easter Morning?

This is a dilemma I have every year, I’ve celebrated Easter every year since childhood, but since I was not brought up in a particularly religious manner Easter was strictly of the commercial kind.

Now, as an adult I find myself obligated to continue with tradition and I always find myself in a quandary.

The “Easter bonnet” is tradition, but no one really wears hats much anymore (much to my dismay, if you feel like rocking one I say more power to you!) That tradition does hold on to this need to dress nicely. Easter is not a casual affair.

One must also look festive; the go to LBD does not work for this event.
So, there is the color question…you want to be festive, but you don’t want to actually look like an Easter egg. After all, you don’t want to look like you are wearing a costume, this is not Halloween!
I advise everyone to look current and Chic, no matter what the affair.
Some color is necessary for a true Easter look, but to stay updated, look well dressed.
Blousy tops, ruffles, bows, floral are all perfect trends for an Easter look, if done with an editing eye.
Try pairing a pop of color with the current neutrals.
For a more casual look try a bright ruffled blouse with dressy Khaki short and a pump. A Draped flesh toned dress will make you look chic, pair it with a pop of color in the shoe. A sheer blouse with a fun skirt and floral nude shoes is a playful look.

A ruffled solid skirt with a printed top is a nice way to bring color to your face.
Remember, have fun with your look, choose one “Easter” piece and build around it!

Getting organized in the closet

• Make sure everything is on its own hanger, it is best if all your hangers are uniform

• Have enough room that you can see everything, including shoes and accessories. ( if you have limited space consider storing your clothes that are off season)

• Organize everything by Color and Garment type. Within the Garment type separate by dress level.

• Your closet is for your clothes only! (it should be used for other storage)

(keep accessories seperated)

• Have a box, bag or bulletin board in your closet with a sewing kit, seam ripper, stain remover, lint remover, double sided tape, a place to put extra buttons and thread, receipts from returnable items, and a place to keep an ongoing shopping list.

• You must have an accessible full length mirror close to your closet.

• An accessible Iron and/or steamer

Love at first sight is not always all it is cracked up to be.

It’s one of the first rules of a professional shoppers no list, yet we’ve all done it.

I know that I’ve done it Countless times.

It’s emotional shopping.

We see that item;

it could be a dress, a shoe, or a hand bag.

The minute we see it, it is all we see and it draws us from across the store like magic.

We want it, we have to have it!

It doesn’t matter how much it costs, or even if it fits us at times. We have lost all power of reason, because we are IN LOVE!

We buy the item, and take it home on some sort of unexplainable shoppers High.

Then a strange thing happens…

we don’t actually wear or use the item. Perhaps because we simply spent too much money on it and feel guilty.

Or we discover the item is not as wonderful as we thought it was. We don’t have anything to wear it with, or it doesn’t fit that well if at all.

The Honeymoon is over. We have Shoppers Remorse.

The moral of the story is always shop with a plan.

Know what you need to complete your wardrobe and try not to buy emotionally.

Yes, you should love everything you take home, but like a new relationship, go on a couple of dates first before you move in together.

Because, love at first sight is not always what it is cracked up to be!

Mesh is not a completly new material for shoes, but it is being used in a completly new way this season.

This year we saw a lot of modern looks with a minimalistic style.
Hair was simple and sleek and there was very little jewelry, if any at all.

While some of the Red Carpet looks seemed elegant, unfortunately many of the stars looked almost underdressed and too casual…

I have to admit I missed some of the over the top Glamour this year!

I saw two disintly different things happening on the runway:

One was this sleek, straight, gown with a modern silhouette in a reflective material; the other was a classic structured, fluted shaped gown with a sleeveless or one shoulder neck line.

Shades of red were popular, as was silver…Gold of course was the most coveted color of all.

Spring Trends 2011

There are many fun trends that walkked down the runways as well as the pieces we are going to see in the stores. A few great pieces from this season can add new pizazz to an existing wardrobe.
Find the trend that suits your style:

• 70’s inspired Glamour: we are seeing retro glamour straight from Studio 54!

• Bold Color: Any color that can be thought of, as long as it is bold bright and eye catching

• Crisp White: for Spring , white is the new black

• Light Metallic’s: silver, gold and bronzes are all airy and easy, and anything but heavy!

• Asian Floral: Flowers are a popular motif for spring, this year they hail from the far east

• Feminine Lace: Lace is popping up everywhere giving simple pieces a romantic air!

• Men’s wear inspired: It is inspired by traditional men’s suiting but it is sexy and playful

• Urban Safari: Punk meets Olives and khaki’s while Cargo pants go black and grey.

Last night, while grocery shopping, I saw a sight that made me a little sad....
Let’s just say that not all trends are meant for anyone to wear.
It is too bad that everyone is not as aware of their own bodies and their limitations as they should be.
Leggings for instance can easily be abused:

....So as I turned down an aisle in the grocery store I found myself behind a woman that was a victim of trend confusion, wearing an unfortunate look for her body.

Let’s just say that the first place my eyes were drawn was to her abundant behind, tightly clad in sparkly gray leggings. This same area of her body was then very well framed by the back of a dark grey draped cardigan that neatly hung from her like a table cloth....
It was really not a pretty sight!

All the advice I can give is; try to know your body and know what works for you, but especially know what does not!

New Year: New Look

Start the New Year right by re-defining your image,
even the smallest changes can make a huge difference.

We tend to hold on to things that we wear often, even when we know that these items do not support us at our best.
But because we have nothing else that serves the purpose, we wear the items anyway and thus they stay in our wardrobe while not helping us look our best.

So try shedding a few things in your closet that may be still be useful but are looking a bit tired, and replace them with an updated version!

Dressing well for the casual cold

It’s the beginning of January and it has been freezing!
It’s been hard to get out from under the warm covers in the morning let alone think about putting presentable clothes on!
I’ve found that most of my clients have a system for dressing for work in the winter (dark wool is usually a large portion of how they do this)

but dressing socially, especially at more casual events in the winter, and still looking good, often presents a problem.

My first helpful tip for this dilemma is

don’t be afraid to dress too formally,

very rarely is a person over dressed as awkward looking as someone under dressed. So if you’re not sure, go ahead and put on the cashmere blazer, the silk scarf or the wool sheath dress.

But seriously, the easiest way to dress warmly in a casual environment without looking dumpy is to keep the entire ensemble simple. The worst mistake is to keep adding layers that you don’t need. If it’s cold wear a silk undershirt for warmth, not three layers of sweaters. Wear one heavier top like a thick sweater or you can pair a thin top, silk or wool would be the warmest, with one top layer in the form of a vest or jacket.

warm leggings with boots are a perfect winter look; pair it with a slim turtle neck and warm vest.

A warm skinny cargo pant with booties paired with a belted sweater tunic is cute and cozy as well.

Boot cut trousers look sophisticated with a simple shirt and shrug.

Skirts with tights are great; keep the top simple without layers, like one chic warm sweater. (I love the figure eight sweaters that are out now)

Since you will most likely be wearing some layers,

don’t over accessorize.

A great scarf would be the warmest choice, so make it the showcase and everything else you wear should complement the scarf instead of distracting from it. If you are wearing a bunch of layers on top, adding the scarf may be too much,

opt for a hat or just a simple hair accessory if your warm enough instead.

This season I’ve fallen in love with all the lavish frills a woman can put on her head or in her hair!
I’m not talking about the functional wool caps that we all wear when it gets cold, but the bits of decretive flair that we can add to an outfit just to add a bit of character.

I wore a different hat for every dressed up function I attended over the holidays and I fully intend to wear one on New Year’s Eve.

Everyone I ran into, loved the hats I wore.

I love fishnet stockings, but there is a right way to wear them, and then it becomes easy to cross a line and wear them in a way that is VERY wrong!

With Halloween just around the corner, and half the population desiring a “sexy” look, fishnets are perfect…go wild!
But if you are not dressing in a costume, take caution with the alluring fishnets. They can be too much for day looks and over the top for evenings, unless you use them thoughtfully.

Fishnets, by the nature of their history, have an alluring style to them.
They will add sex appeal to almost anything you pair them with. So when wearing fishnets you must use them with an editorial eye!
Use fishnets to spice up a plain outfit, or something that may look too demure.

The very chic “lady like” look can be a bit old fashion on some, the fishnet is a perfect way to add some edge to that 50’s throwback look.
If the outfit is about the fishnets, then keep everything else fairly conservative; don’t show off too much skin or too many curves.

I love pairing fishnets with a high necked sweater dress. A sweater dress on its own can be a bit frumpy at times, fishnets add the sass!

It is mid October, and despite the Indian summer that Northern California was enjoying there is a new crispness to the air. How do you dress for this odd transitional weather? For work or play; the goal is to be comfortable, dress appropriately for the season and look stylish!

Summer colors are out, it is fall after all.
Exchange the poppy orange for pumpkin and lilacs for burgundy, flashes of true red are also big this fall which is easy to mix into any wardrobe.
This season Neutrals are important mixed with jewel tones and Metallic’s, especially army green, grey and camel. Keep those light neutrals out, they work great for the warmth in the middle of the day and still look current for fall, while you may want to hold off on too much black for another month or two.

Save money and keep your style fresh by finding things you already own and creating new looks with them.

The first step is to organize your closet, If you can’t see what you have your never going to be inspired to create new looks! It may help to put like colors together in order of garment type or vice versa. Patterns should be put with group that represents the most dominant color. (Example: Red; jackets, tops bottoms, -a black and red striped pant would go here-. Brown: jackets, tops, -a brown, green and red paisley blouse may go here-bottoms. Blue; jackets-a blue and white seersucker may go here-tops, bottoms, ECT.)

Step two is to go through everything. Separate the Items you wear all the time from the items you wear occasionally, from the items you never wear.

See if you can create one new outfit with every piece you always wear. It is great to pull from your other two groups during this part of the process.
• With the second group, go through the same steps. As you put on each piece you may start to see why you don’t wear these clothes as much. You may not actually love the way the garment looks and so you avoid wearing it until you have nothing else that serves its purpose. You also may love the single garment, but do not have the items the garment needs to create a complete outfit. This is where you must start a list of items you think you need to complete the looks with what you already own.
• With the last group, the process begins the same way. You must put on every item and ask yourself why this item never gets worn. Many of the answers are the same as you had with the second group of clothes, though perhaps more drastic. Ask yourself what you need to do to make this item more wearable for you. It is in this final group that you may find some true gems in your closet, but most of these clothes are probably ready to be retired, and you'll be surprised at how much more you'll have to wear once your closet isn't packed with clothes you don't wear!
This is also the hardest step for most people and you also may find that you really need a second pair of educated and discerning eyes!

A celebrity with truly great legs

We all have things about our Body that we really love, as well as parts that we find fault with. Over dressing the good parts badly can be look just as bad as under dressing the parts that we would like to ignore.

I saw this girl, she couldn’t have been more then 15, who had quite the look going on today. While from the look of her worked over outfit, she is definitely a future fashionista, she hasn’t quite figured it all out yet.
She had legs that were about five miles long: she reminded me of a young foal or Great Dane puppy, because all that leg seemed to still have a mind of its own!
She was wearing a cute blue short Jumper with a white blouse over it, high heeled slouchy cowboy boots, (which on her, barely went past her ankles), and RED Fishnet Stockings!
When I first saw this girl from down the block, all I saw were red legs with a bit of blue on top and brown on the bottom. It really wasn’t a flattering outfit for this girl, who probably could be a super model tomorrow!

What was she thinking? Where did she go wrong?

Her entire outfit was about those legs. Yes, she is lucky she has those long legs, but everything she wore called attention to them, and everything else got lost. Her legs call attention to themselves, they needed no help.

How could she have done this outfit better?

Here are some ideas for those "poor souls" with such long legs they don’t know what to do!
First of all, stay away from a short short mini hem length. Take up some of that leg length by choosing hems that come to the mid thigh or lower.
The high heeled ankle bootie things didn’t help either…a ballet flat is always nice with long legs but try a taller boot with a kitten heel, or a gladiator flat sandal if you want some edge. If you must do a high heel, go with a classic pump style.

Finally the fishnets: while a nude or a neutral would have not looked like a blinking neon sign, if colored tights is what the look called for, then make sure the color is dominant in other parts of the outfit, so just the legs don’t pop out.

For Warmer weather, find Shoes that POP!

Warm weather shoes shouldn’t be chunky or big or heavy. They need to have a look of being light and airy, as well as feeling that way. Unlike their fall and winter counterparts a shoe for warm weather needs to allow the elements in a bit.

So how does a shoe for the hotter months still have presence and make an addition to an ensemble?
There are some basic design elements that really say spring and summer in a shoe. It is all in the detail and color of the shoes.
• A Great statement shoe for the upcoming months has a pop of color and a detail like a flower or airy strap that says warmth.
• Wedges are a popular style for summer shoes, and for a higher heel the wedge is more supportive and comfortable.
• We are of course seeing many fun sandals with all sorts of treatments, from floral, to zipper edging to Ruffles. The Gladiator style is still very popular and is really the sandal influence right now.
• As far as color this season, yellow is it, but anything bright will work this season. For more toned down colors a light neutrals or skin tones gives the leg a very light long look which we love in warm weather.

• Finding a professional shoe for a business look can be trickier in the spring and summer, but also should be fun. While a business shoe cannot be a strappy sandal, or even open toed in many work environments, there are still business appropriate shoes that are lighter and more “spring like”. Look for a simple pump with a classic silhouette, but with a detail of color. If all your business attire is neutral, find a colorful pump to add a touch of spring color.

They are out there! Besides color, a summer shoe can have an interesting contrast of materials, like a punched out leather or a use of mesh. Details like a flower or a ruffle treatment also add lightness to the shoe.

• A Sporty style of shoe is going to have to be comfortable with no fuss. Casually a sporty personality would probably prefer sandals or even flip flops, but for a professional look a ballet flat in a bright color is perfect.
• The true Traditional will probably shy away from a “summer shoe” being more comfortable in neutral loafers or pumps. Push the envelope a bit and look for something with a nautical look. Navy and white or light tan leather is summery, current, and traditional.
• An Elegant style will be uncomfortable with bright colors and crazy design details, but a mixture of lighter materials in a neutral color will work for an elegant wardrobe.
• A Dramatic will not only do bold color, but high contrast. Black and white in a shoe is great for warm weather
• Allurings may want to show off a bit of skin on the foot and will probably like a bit more heel. A simple shoe with a higher heal, a peep toe if they can or a sling back and a simple pattern like animal or polka dots will appeal to the Alluring
• With the Creative style, anything goes with the shoe. The more of a statement it makes, the more bizarre it is the more it will appeal to them. The popular Gladiator style is a hit with the creative. If they cannot do wild silhouettes, the creative’s will eat up the bright color combinations that come out in the spring.
• The big Floral and Ruffle trends we are seeing this season will appeal to the Feminine Style, who will also wear color and “airy” looking styles.

For the spring and summer months find shoes that are softer, lighter, brighter, and airier.

Have a bit of fun with an unexpected detail or a pop of color.

There is the right shoe for you, no matter what your style is!

Coordinating your swim suit ensemble.

This Summer, it’s not just about the bathing suit but everything you wear with it!
From your flip flops to your beach tote, you’ll feel much more confident in your bathing suit if your entire look is thought out.

Many of us have more than one bathing suit, so don’t try too hard to match your swim suits with the extras…. it can get very pricey and often looks over done.

Instead, try coordinating a few things; like your beach shoes with your beach tote or your sun hat with your cover up and sunglasses.

If these pieces work together, almost any bathing suit will work with them.
A hint: If you like bathing suits with a lot of color and design, keep the accessories simple and neutral…if you tend to go for simple bathing suits, then get extras with a bit to say.

There are some crazy totes out this summer, pick one out that you really love and start coordinating everything to that.
Try on some cover ups and choose a shoe that goes with it. Then work from there to coordinate the rest of the outfit!

Being a sports spectator and still looking Chic?

This past weekend was the Kentucky Derby, one of the best dressed Sports events yearly. Sadly, many of those great looks were covered with plastic to avoid getting soggy this year.

But for those regular summer events, how do you dress well as a spectator without looking out of place and staying comfortable.

Jeans have become a very chic and respectable addition to any Fashionista’s Wardrobe. Get a great fitting pair of jeans that are hemmed for a flat shoe and that is an easy choice for a casual weekend game. If it’s too hot for jeans, try Khaki Bermuda shorts, Capri length leggings or a cotton A-line skirt. Comfort Tip: fabric with stretch is always better then something more structured and constricting.

For the top there are a slew of “cute” cotton T’s out there which are colorful (perhaps the shade of your favorite team) and can be found in various flattering styles and lengths (longer with leggings, and closer to wait or hip for Shorts and skirts) . If it’s a breezy evening event, a shrunken cardigan can keep off the chill, or a microteck cropped jacket can be a really great layering piece and still work for a casual environment. Just Please, don’t revert to the oversized shapeless hoodey!

Even if you are not headed to the horse races in your fabulous hat you can and should, still look great as devoted spectator! Need help with these playful sport themed looks, ask a professional!

It is a beautiful sunny day today, one of the warmest that we have had this year, and I see this women walking out of a boutique in head to toe black. She was a stunning woman, but all that black with very little skin showing...honestly, it was too much.

While black is universally thought of as the ultimately chic color, it’s not. Not for everyone at least.
The fact is, many people do not look good in black at all. While others, who can wear black well, tend to overdo it.
There are a small handful of people I’ve known in my life that can really pull off the very dramatic and distinct style of an all black wardrobe.
Not only does your coloring have to be powerful enough to be truly enhanced by black, put you need a strong character to back up the all-black-look as well.
A person all in black is usually perceived as dark and a bit intimidating and not someone that is easy to approach. If this is not your intention, tone down the black.

It’s spring; add a bit of color to your wardrobe of black.
If you can’t deal with color, add another neutral like white or tan to help break up the blackness.

Even a patterned scarf or a brightly colored shoe can help disperse the extreme look of just black. There are so many choices out there to add to a wardrobe to lighten and brighten basic black.

It’s spring; don’t get stuck in just black. Have some fun with color!

The printed skirt is very popular right now and is a great way to freshen up a tired wardrobe, making basic pieces look current.

The right printed Skirt can really brighten up your ensemble when paired with a great jacket or blouse, it’s perfect for the office or an afternoon garden party.

Picking the right printed skirt to add to your spring wardrobe begins with knowing the type of prints that match your style. The same skirt in different prints can create completely different statements.
• Floral is a very big motif this spring. Typically Florals are considered Feminine or Elegant. This season however, we see the floral motif used in rather unconventional ways and can be quite vivid and even a bit edgy, appealing to the Sporty or Dramatic personalities.

• Animal prints are still big and are always appealing to an Alluring personality.
• Painterly motifs and Ethnic prints, which are also popular now, are mostly creative in flavor but can also work for a dramatic look if it has bold lines and high contrast.
• Both nautical and traditional graphics like stripes, plaid and polka dots tend to appeal to the more traditional or sporty styles.

When thinking about prints, it is also important to keep in mind the scale of the graphic, because it can strongly influence the way the proportions of the entire outfit appear.
Basically a petite person will want to work with smaller prints and a person of grander scale will want larger prints. A print can actually be a great tool for creating illusion and tweaking disproportions. The way the print lies across the skirt will also have an effect on how the eye follows the print and so it affects proportions; horizontal lines will widen, vertical lines lengthen, and diagonal lines add movement. An easy way to change the appearance of the scale of your bottom half is to find a skirt with a print that is closer to the scale you want, and moves the eye in the desired direction. Now let’s talk about the silhouette of the skirt.
The two popular silhouettes right now are the Pencil skirt which can very chic for a business look pared with a great sweater or blouse, and the pleated skirt which can soften and punch up a stuffy suit jacket.
The other skirt style which is popular with prints is the tiered skirt, although generally used for dressier looks it can be stunning placed in the right business look, and can work well in a day to night ensemble.

A length to about the knee is a very appropriate length for Business. While a shorter skirt is considered dressier and too revealing for business, appropriate only for personal events, a skirt that falls past the mid calf can look heavy and matronly.
A great Printed Skirt can really add to your existing wardrobe for this spring and summer!

“Shopping in your Closet” Fashion Show

At the Day for Women event In Petaluma!

What an event this turned out to be.

We had a great time putting together this show.
The Three Models: Diane, Robyn, & Sharron

We started with pieces from each of our Models closets that just weren’t getting as much use out of as they wanted to. We delved into the reasons why and then came up with some solutions.
Based on those solutions and some supplemental pieces from various Spring2010 Collections,
we created brand new, updated outfits that really popped on stage. I know these ladies loved their new looks because they had way to much fun in front of the audience.
A lot of the initial work was done by phone and email, so this morning before the show was a real whirlwind.

It was fun though, and we ended up with stunning looks for the show!

I’d like to give a special thanks to my three great Models: Diane, Robyn, and Sharron!
They really sparkled this morning on stage.

The turnout was terrific with an audience was full of enthusiastic energy. I think everyone had a great time, and I hope everyone got a little something out of the show. I asked the audience to find me later and tell me something that inspired them, there were some great answers!
One women told me about her two walk in closets full of clothes she’ll never wear again, she just couldn’t face going through them……I told her to give a call!
Another woman asked me about finding looks that hid body flaws, I told her that was easy and there were a number of tricks she could easily use.
A couple of ladies were just really enthusiastic about the idea of being able to give old clothes a new life. They told me all about the pieces they had they now feel they could possibly resurrect. They were so excited; it was fun talking to them.

The best part of this event for me was being amongst all these inspirational women, listening to all their stories about how their lives have been touched by Cancer. It was wonderful knowing I could give them a small bit of advice to enrich their lives and feel good about themselves.

Discarded to Divine

Friday night I attended the preview of”Discarded to Divine” at the de Young Museum.
It was quite an event.
This was a show of unique garments made of discarded, un-wearable clothes redesigned into something new.

The garments themselves varied greatly.
From arts and crafts looking pieces to pieces that could have stepped off any runway this season. It was interesting to see the way different designers interpreted this concept. The pieces I really appreciated had meticulous construction, looked current in design and were wearable.

• One beautiful piece was an old full length Camel coat, that while maintaining its original function, was cut up and reworked into a very modern, sophisticated looking short Jacket.

I really liked this concept because it is a solution we could all have done to some of those un-wearable pieces sitting in the back of our closets that we just can’t let go of!!!

• On the other side of the spectrum was another interesting and very wearable garment , a pair of Bermuda shorts wade of men’s dress shirts. You could still recognize the detail of the shirt but it was now in unusual and surprising places. This garment was both unique and fashion forward.

Then there were the variety of people in attendance.
The whole concept of discarded to divine is a concept that appeals to a wide range of people.
Just watching the crowd and the way they were dressed was an education in style, because let me tell you there was a bit of everything there!
From the glamorous to the arts and crafts look. There were whacky hats, stilettos, floor length prairie skirts from the 70’s, crazy coats and everything in-between!
There were some really well dressed people in the crowd, along with the very creative, and very wacky. Though at times I thought I was at a costume party rather than a fashion inspired event, there were some a few people really dressed in the spirit of the evening.
One woman had this beautiful vintage inspired vest with a modern white shirt dress and great gladiators; it was a stunning ensemble very fitting for the evening’s event!

It definitely was a night for the creative.

A Day of Health and Joy for Women

It is a day for women to find support whose lives have been touched by this disease; whether a survivor who is trying to take full advantage of her new life, someone going through chemo presently, or a person who has lost a wife, mother, sister, daughter to the disease. This event is intended to provide education, support, fun, and a place for information. This is going to be a day full of events to support Woman’s Cancer Awareness.

What Was She Thinking?

On my Sunday observations today I noticed a trend of badly coordinated patterns.

This was particularly apparent with one woman, who though dressed with style had chosen to put three different patterns together that did work, all variations of animal prints: She had on a grey and black animal print cardigan over and green and black camo print tank, blue jeans and very cute animal print flats. The result was a chaos of spots that did not work well together!

I’ve seen this done before successfully but it is hard. If you are going to mix patterns, which can create a very interesting, playful look, your must do it thoughtfully.
It is best if the patterns do not compete, so mix scale and motif. For Example, a large scale paisley over a tight check can work well together as opposed to the Spotty animal print over the spotty camo in the same scale.
There also should be some common theme between the two patters like a common color or shape or even contrasting colors work well. An orange check with a blue stripe is poppy and eye catching. The two animal prints, though common in theme, had nothing for the eye to connect them together.

The outfit she wore was a cute idea, each individual garment was great, but really, what was she thinking???It just shows how important it is to think how you put things together. Have fun mixing patterns, but do it with care! (A hint for spring, florals are big and mix with argyle really well)

The Blazer: a Wardrobe Staple

What types of blazers have you seen that you loved?

How do you like to wear your blazers?

The modern Blazer is the not so distant decedent of the utilitarian garment worn as part of a uniform for those attending a prestigious school. Subtly it has been a symbol of someone that is well educated and thus of a certain class, implying wealth. The blazer is a lightweight, single or double breasted jacket with a notched lapel; traditionally it is a solid navy. Like the Sport Coat, the blazer is considered a separate and is worn with non-coordinated attire. Both would be considered sportswear in the day that they evolved from, and today still are considered more casual then their cousin the suit Jacket. The only difference between a blazer and a sports coat today is that the blazer is a solid color, and the sport coat is made of a woven fabric like tweed.

A great Blazer is one of those pieces in your wardrobe that you can put over just about anything and instantly it adds polish to a look. Currently there are three basic styles that the blazer is found in: the standard blazer, the shrunken blazer, and the boyfriend blazer.

The standard blazer of today is very true to its original Ancestor. It can come in any number of colors, but it is always a true solid. This blazer maintains a conservative collar and a notched lapel, and, while structured, usually has an easier fit. The standard blazer does not stray much in design or silhouette. It appeals to a traditional and sometimes sporty style. This blazer is usually the base of an outfit, but alone makes very little statement. The look it is worn with will depend on the other pieces paired with it to create a statement and personality. The standard blazer is a very grounding addition to a wardrobe.

The Shrunken style has been popular for a while. This blazer is the most stylized of the three and the most diverse in design. The character of the shrunken blazer can be anything from a classically elegant look to something more creative or feminine. The shrunken blazer can define the mood of an outfit and make a statement on its own.

The Boyfriend Blazer has made a huge Showing in Fashion recently, particularly in the last two seasons. It is a very current look right now. Almost every label has some version of the Boyfriend Blazer. Unlike the shrunken blazer, this blazer stays true to a specific silhouette. As the Boyfriend Blazer’s name implies, it is directly inspired by the classic Men’s wear Blazer. It tends to appeal to a more dramatic or sporty personality. This blazer says “I’m cool, casual, carefree, and not afraid of men’s wear.” The boyfriend blazer has one particular thing to say, it will make that statement no matter how it is worn.

While classically, the blazer is considered a conservative fashion, it has recently evolved into something that can be quite chic. Having this staple in your wardrobe will transform a basic look into something more classic and sophisticated.
The secret is, to find that perfect blazer just for you.

The Motorcycle inspired jacket is the most distinct style of the popular jackets right now.

The Red Carpet at the Oscars

I have to start by saying I was rather underwhelmed by the style I saw on the red carpet this evening.
While no one was memorably bad, not many were memorable at all.
It wasn’t’ until later as the presenters began to come on stage that I started to see some full styles I loved. Remember, it’s not just about the dress, it’s also the hair, the use of accessories, and how this all fits the person wearing it.

My vote for best dressed were:
Kate Winslet, she always look old hollywood even in this modern dress
Helen Mirren, so classy and so sexy
Sandra Bullock, she was dressed to win
Kristen Stewart, I want this midnight blue Mermaid dress
Elizabeth Banks, Cool slate grey was classic and unique
Jenna Hurt, classic

(and lets not forget Robert Downey Jr. in his turquoise bow tie!)

I think that there is no doubt that Sandra Bullock was the shining star tonight. From the Golden gown to the golden award she won for best actress in a leading role. She looked as elegant and poised as her acceptance speech.

Cool with a pop of Color.

I was having brunch on the Mission, and was struck by this fabulously dressed woman walking down the street.
She looked Classic, funky and fun all at the same time.
It was great.

She wore Trouser Jeans in a dark wash, a black long sleeve top with this great faux leopard swing Jacket.
Chic. That is all I have to say.

Then to top it off, and what made the whole thing really special was this awesome Kelly green, snakeskin clutch.
Yummy.

You couldn’t help but notice her as she came down the street, yet her outfit was really so simple.

She was truly Chic with a pop!

Casually Chic, Simply done.

While out at the Farmers Market Today, three people really caught my eye. Not because they were dressed outrageously, or so fashionably that they stood out from the crowd; but because each of these people were dressed appropriately for a casual Sunday morning in the sun to buy produce while still looking stylish and sophisticated.
It was the way they were able to dress in an understated manner that allowed them to be distinguished among the crowd, yet fit in. In these same looks, any one of these three could have easily moved on to a nice lunch in San Francisco or even a casual business meeting.

• The first woman who caught my eye was wearing a simple black collared shirt, Black pants that fit her perfectly, a fitted vest in a mossy teal, simple black loafers and a strand of big fabulous Pearls. Without the pearls that caught a tone of grey in her hair I probably would have not noticed her. That simple addition to a very basic, yet elegantly simple outfit, made her distinctive

• The next person I saw whose outfit really caught my attention was a man in Jeans and t-Shirt. The Jeans were a simple dark wash with a hint of fading; he wore a grey t-shirt with a brown pattern on the front, and a cotton sport coat in the same brown tone. His shoes and belt were unremarkable, but in a similar brown so the whole look somehow related while still looking accidental. This guy, in a casual manner looked really chic. Again this simple outfit caught my eye with the single element of repeating color.

• Finally a woman in navy caught my eye. This woman was the most elegantly dressed person I’ve ever seen at the Farmers Market, yet she still looked like she fit right in. She wore all Navy: shoes, pants, and a knit top under a longer white and navy cardigan. Her hair was in a neat ponytail and she had simple silver studs in her ears. The brilliance of this outfit was simply in its neat simplicity.

What all three people had in common was simplicity with attention to the details. Nothing was too trendy or bold, yet they all had unmistakable style. They were dressed appropriately casual for the environment, but looked very chic so that you couldn’t help but notice of them.

The White Shirt: A Staple

CRISP. CLEAN. CLASSIC. CHIC.

What is the right white shirt for you?
How do you find the white shirt that is most flattering and appropriate for your body and that expresses your style best? There are many different Elements to the design and style of a white shirt. To wade through these elements you must first know what situations you would be wearing the white shirt in, secondly take your body type into account to find the style that fits your body best, and finally think about the details on the garment itself.
The Design elements:
• The collar, particularly, should be proportionate to your body and face. Think about the size of the collar in proportion to your facial features and your shoulders, the width of the collar compared to your jaw line and neck length. In general, a squarer face can wear a wider collar and a oblong face works better in a narrow collar. In terms of style; the more angular the collar shape the more dramatic it will be, the softer the shape the more feminine the style will be.
• Sleeves are a very important design element, especially now. A sleeve with a bit of volume at the shoulder can create added stature, but too much volume can make you look like a football player or simply cartoonish. Extra volume at the bottom of the sleeve will add width to the hips; great for someone with narrow hips but may be too much for a fuller hipped individual. The length of sleeve should also be taken into consideration as it can have considerable influence on the garments wear ability.
• The simpler the design, the more versatile the garment will be in your wardrobe. Extra “stuff” can also be distracting. So think carefully about all those ruffles, puffs, pockets, buttons and bows: they may be cute, fun or trendy, but how useful will they be for your wardrobe?
• Ruching, where the material is gathered together to create a rippled effect, is generally an amazing design element for hiding unflattering curves. Occasionally, ruching has been known to work against you, so try the shirt on before you purchase it, or at least before you wear it to a must-look-great occasion!
• Look at the seams and darts on the garment, the more there are the more fitted it will be. If you want an easier fit, go for less construction, if you want something to fit close to the body in a flattering way, the more structure the more shape you will get. What are the different styles?
The white shirt has become such an important garment that there are now many styles to choose from, it can be overwhelming to try to find the perfect one for you!

• There is the Classic men’s wear inspired shirt; which can go from something very fitted with well placed darts and seams, to something more relaxed and easy in fit.
The Classic White blouse is structured and collared. It fits a person with a more classic or conventional style, but it also the most diverse type of white shirt. The range of fit and design varies greatly with this classic shirt, so you still must be selective and finding the right one for you. There are some really beautiful classic white shirts out there now, so well designed and constructed that they can be worn as a jacket, (a great alternative in warmer weather.)

It is Valentines day, and today there are plenty of adorable couples out and about holding hands and enjoying being in love.

While out this morning with my own Valentine, I saw one such young couple.

They were adorable and probably a new couple as they seemed to be trying very hard to impress one another.

However, in trying to impress her date the girl's dress choice created some confusion to the outside world. Dressed in only a black strapless mini dress with a sweetheart neckline complete with lace detail, she seemed misplaced on this casual Sunday morning. The dress was also an odd choice for a morning in February....yes, it was beautiful today, but it is still winter!

Perhaps they had a very fancy dinner planned, but it seemed to me that 11am was far to early to be dressed up for dinner. Even Audrey Hepburn's classic LBD in 'Breakfast at Tiffany' was day time chic for the era, and let's face it, very few of us can pull off what Audrey could. So,.....

What was she thinking?

To use this particular type of garment in a great day to night ensemble, I have a few options for those of you who may find that must-wear-now dress, even if it is a bit early in the day!

A great cardigan would have made this look work. Either a cute cropped 'cardi', or a longer belted knit jacket would be perfect. An edgy option is a great vest. Again your choice among the many styles would stylishly dress down the dress. From a softer knit vest to a structured men's wear inspired vest would add simple day time style. Finally a funkier shoe choice like a bright chunky heeled sandal would look hip and be completely surprising (in a great, non-confusing way)

So next time you find yourself desiring to wear a coctail dress to breakfast, consider these options, even if you are on a hot date!

I was shopping at Nordstrom's today for a client, looking for great travel sleepwear, when I saw this....the Short Robe "in bloom" by Jonquil.

What a great Valentines gift: cute, sexy, and will continue to work when this day of heart mitifs and pink and red is over!

Tell your valentine about it, or simply surprise them.

Can you stay stylish at a sports event?

OK ladies, I know I should of posted this yesterday, or even last week, but this didn't occur to me until I was actually at a Superbowl party this afternoon!

If you are really into football, that is great.

But, if you insist on wearing your favorite team's jersey, just remember that it was designed to fit a man's body and chances are it is not that flattering on yours!

So if you are going to do it anyway, try a a few style tips to flatter your figure a little better.

If the Jersey is to big for you, then try a casual belt lower on the hips with skinny jeans or leggings. Flats or boots are great with this look and are casual enough for a sports based social event. Some great jewelry will also help keep your look a bit stylish.

If the jersey fits you, you will still need some help defining your body under the shapeless garment. Try wearing a short jacket or cardigan that hits at your waist, over the jersey. This will look best with boot cut or wide leg jeans and either flats or "fashion" athletic shoes.

Today, while having breakfast with my brother I witnessed a girl dressed in an ensemble that still has me real ling....
Remember those work out shorts from the 80's that angled up on the sides and even made the exercises queens look like they had saddle bags?
Well there they were, short, showing off a pantie line under the hem short, in all their purple and yellow glory, sitting over a very tattered pair of black tights. The rest of the outfit was lost to the pairing of these two garments. Both deserving commentary all to there own, but together an ultimate moment of dressing neglect.
I wish I had a picture, in all my shock I could do nothing but stare.
Please don't leave the house in anything like this...In fact if you own anything close to either of these garments, I'm begging you to throw them in the garbage, they are not good enough for anything else!
So what does one wear to breakfast on a Sunday morning when you don't feel like getting dressed yet. (that is the only reason I can Imagine anyone wearing this)
How about good old jeans and a sweater.
Infact legging that are not ripped with a tunic top would be way cuter and just as easy to get into!
